Out Of The Blue Revue

April 4, 7pm – 8pm

John Dutton Theatre
Central Library

The premiere of a spirited variety show in which artists from the homeless community and the greater Calgary community come together to embrace a broad spectrum of performing arts: song, dance, spoken word, and comedy. The evening promises to entertain and delight!

This Is My City’s Art

April 4 to 25

Main Floor
Central Library

This is My City Art Society artists serve as mentors who bring their skills and love of art into shelters and service agencies and connect with individuals there to make music, theatre, and visual art together. We currently hold weekly visual art programs in a variety of media including printmaking, painting, drawing, and found object assemblage at the Calgary Drop-In and Rehab Centre. In addition, a photography workshop is underway at Alpha House and a mural project was recently completed at Alpha House’s transitional housing site The Lodging. The works in this display are a small sample of the many expressions of creativity produced in these settings.

Fantastic And Surreal

April 4 to May 25

The New Gallery’s +15 Window

Ryan Delve conjures up evocative, fantastic images in acrylic paint that flow across clothing and other three-dimensional surfaces. Bill’s sensitive pencil drawings reflect his keen observational skills and a disciplined dedication to capturing the nuances of light and shadow which sometimes jump off the page onto a variety of objects. Though their styles are distinct, Ryan and Bill share a life-long passion for art that finds expression in the art studio of the Calgary Drop-In Centre where they reside.

WRAP!

Spontaneous Dates and Locations

Through acts of yarnbombing, WRAP artists bring the warmth of home and communal creativity to the street. If you are lucky, you might see these textile interventions at festival sites before they are absorbed by the city.

Public Art 101—Artists In The Community

April 9, 6pm – 9pm

Cliff Bungalow Arts Centre

The City of Calgary’s Public Art Program has developed a series of seminars that cover a broad range of themes designed to support local artists who want to develop their practice in public art. This session looks at artists who collaborate with communities. Presented by The City of Calgary’s Public Art Program.

Photo Walk

April 18, noon – 1pm

Outside City Hall

Grab your camera and take a walk with photographer Cat Schick. She’ll lead you through areas of our city that the homeless know well. Using photography as a means of connection among communities, the program will impart technical and aesthetic tips while creating opportunity for dialogue about life in our city.

Film Premiere: Art Has No Home

April 19, 12:10pm – 1pm

Art Gallery Of Calgary

Inspired by friendships with some of Calgary’s talented artists who are often marginalized for being homeless, filmmaker Eunice Poon has married journalism and mixed media in this film. It gives voice to the artists through documentation of their art work, interviews, and their own animation/narrative within the film. The 30-minute screening will be followed by a question and answer session with the filmmaker and some of the individuals featured. Supported in part by GIGyyc.

Six Minute Stories

April 20, 3pm – 4:30pm

Lunchbox Theatre

Join us for a fun and informative afternoon in a lively pecha kucha exchange. Each speaker has six minutes and 18 slides to tell their story. This celebration of ideas features personal experiences or professional projects that touch on universal social issues. Hosted by TMC chair Linda Hawke.

Other—A Public Art Installation

April 22 to 25

Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts

Leslie Sweder’s site-specific art responds to her environment in surprising and touching ways. Watch her as she works on a sculpture commissioned by The City of Calgary especially for the Festival. Presented by The City of Calgary Public Art Program.

City Of Dreams

April 23, 24 and 25, 7:30pm - 8:30pm

Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts
Arts Learning Centre

An ensemble of speakers from the Women’s Centre of Calgary present talks on diverse and surprising topics that reveal personal passions and expertise. Inspired by magpies – those urban birds known to collect baubles and shiny bits from our city streets – the evening is full of insights and laughs that expose the depth and intelligence of women who have been marginalized.

Dream Quilts On Exhibit

April 23, 24 and 25, 7:00pm

Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts
Arts Learning Centre

In a residency at the Women’s Centre of Calgary, Linda Hawke and Cat Schick worked with participants to create artistic quilts that explore themes of sleep and dreams.

Festival Finale

April 25, 8:45pm – 10pm

Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts
Arts Learning Centre

Join us for eclectic festivities that celebrate the spirit of the Festival. The evening will include spoken word performances by artist Kirk Miles and others, music from Drop-In Centre artists, and opportunities to meet and mingle with This is My City artists and supporters.
